STYLE REPORT | Blonde Ambitions

The best blonde hair colours are decidedly luxurious. We’re talking the vast blonde spectrum from the lightest high-wattage hues to the darkest, coolest shades. Whether you want subtle highlights to liven up already blonde tresses or a complete transformation fro a dark natural hair colour, going blonde can refresh the entire face—acting as an instant illuminator for the eyes and the skin.  From crisp champagne to pink-infused platinum, going blonde can be fun but with so many shades and sub shades it can be confusing.

The Queen of blonde at Lady Marmalade is Danni, who has shared some of her secrets:

  • Generally, it’s best to stay within two levels of your natural hair colour when dying your hair blonde.
  • Consider your skin tone. Are you fair, medium or dark skinned? Your complexion will affect how your hair looks when you go blonde.
  • Eye colour matters when selecting the best blonde hair color for you. Some shades of blonde are best with blue, green or hazel eyes, while other blonde hues look best with big brown or black eyes.
  • What kind of image are you after? Do you want a natural, sun-kissed look? Or do you want in-your-face blonde style?

That said, when going blonde, there are all kinds of ways to break the rules. Regardless of what you’re looking for, remember that the most important thing to do when dying your hair blonde is to talk to your stylist. A good colourist knows how to dye any colour of hair blonde, and can save you the grief of a bad outcome.

Here are a few basic blonde color categories that provide hair colouring ideas and tips on how to select your custom colour.

Platinum Blonde

Platinum blonde hair colour is the lightest of all the blonde shades, and is best on fair skin tones or medium skin tones with a yellowish tint. But this palest of blonde hues looks fabulous with any eye colour, and is particularly striking with bright blue or brown eyes. The popularity of platinum hair shades has been around a long time but the trend has taken on an edgier look in more recent years, often with all-over platinum colour.

Light Ash Blonde

Light ash blonde hair colour is a whiter shade of blonde that has an ashy, or gray, tint. It could be described as cool platinum, and looks best on lighter complexions with lighter eye colours. Lady Gaga has sported this hue, which can be achieved on lighter natural hair colours through balayage, or all-over colour on those with darker natural hair colours.

Natural Blonde

Natural blonde hair color is as it sounds: blonde hair that looks like you were born with it. This baby blonde color is multidimensional, having several similar blonde shades within the same family of color. This looks great on any skin tone, as long as the shades mimic skin color: i.e., for lighter skin, keep the color shades lighter, and for darker skin, darken up the shades to keep it natural-looking.

Golden blondes

Multi-coloured hues like rose gold blonde or the newer ‘blorange’ have been the ‘IT’ colour for many a famous face in recent times, and have reached new heights over summer (to match rosé season?).

In the same way that a rosy flush warms up washed-out cheekbones, soft rose gold highlights can heat up the hair as well. Natural rose gold tones can richen dull blonde colour, bringing out a glow in warm skin and a blush to paler complexions with yellow undertones. Although best achieved on flaxen strands, bronzy brunettes (once pre-bleached) can certainly wear it, too. The pink tends to be on the cool side whereas the blonde is more gold, making it work well on a variety of skin tones.
